Further mulling over the OP's questions, I've been thinking about the experiences of Kathryn Wadell Takara, Daphne Barbee-Wooten, Judge Sandra Simms, Helene Hale, and several other prominent African American women in Hawai'i.
The one thing that all of them had in common was that none of them did any undergraduate work in Hawai'i.
